SUMMARY

Aids in directing and coordinating departmental workflow to lay out, fit, and weld fabricated, cast, and forged components to assemble products to complete specific military projects by performing the following duties.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Follows necessary MGS and customer-specific procedures, work instructions, and quality practices.
  • Reads complex paperwork/drawings in job packet and/or follows oral instructions to ascertain materials and process for fabrication.
  • Interprets, follows, and completes forms to ensure compliance with necessary departmental MGS procedures, work instructions, and documentation.
  • Proficient with various forms of measurements and measuring devices such as tape measures, combination square, angle finder, calipers (dial, digital), carpenters square, temperature sticks, digital thermometer.
  • Measures, cuts, grinds, bevels, drills, or otherwise prepare parts using small tools such as grinders, drills, torch, or plasma cutter to specifications provided.
  • Lies out, positions, aligns and fits components together within established criteria, procedure, or tolerance.
  • Bolts, Clamps, braces, fixtures and tack-weld parts to secure in position for welding.
  • Verification of layout or set up of parts for associates throughout process to maintain quality controls
  • Set up equipment and welds parts using MIG or TIG welding equipment.
  • Utilizes torch to preheat and control temperature of materials for welding.
  • Reviews findings of Certified Weld Inspector as needed.
  • Able to assist in documentation of weld completion and inspection as needed.
  • Assembles parts by bolting and riveting, when necessary.
  • Rework products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts.
  • Safely operates forklift, tractors or electric hoists to move product, when necessary.
  • Follows safety guidelines and uses all required personal protective equipment.
  • Performs routine maintenance and housekeeping in welding area as necessary.


LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Communicates completion expectations and works with team members to produce product.
  • Attends project meetings as assigned.
  • Instructs others on job procedures as needed.
  • After conferring with the manager, directs the team to stage and produce products with the greatest efficiency.
  • Communicates work schedules with employees after conferring with manager.
  • Aids in the training of new employees
  • Assists manager with the selection of new employees.
  • Assists manager in maintaining time records and other production records.
  • Supplies the supervisor with input for employee evaluations.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists workers in solving work problems.
  • Recommends measures to improve production methods, for quality and efficiency of product.
  • Suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop.
  • Maintains knowledge about the products produced and the best methods to produce them.
  • Monitors workplace safety practices to ensure policy and procedure adherence.
  • Accountable for supervision of supplied company tools and consumables used in the area.
  • Monitors work areas to maintain organization and adherence to FOD protocols
  • Delegates and ensures work are shut down procedures followed on daily basis.
  • Tools put away
  • Cords & Welding Leads Stowed
  • Overhead Cranes parked
  • Remove scrap materials
  • Powered equipment such as weld machines or rotators are de-energized


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Acts as the team lead with 3 to 4 welders on long-term military projects.

CERTIFICATIONS

Possess or capable of attaining the following AWS Code Certifications in a short amount of time

-AWS D1.1 - Structural welding (steel)(3G GMAW)

-AWS D1.1 - Structural welding (steel)(1G GTAW)

-AWS D1.3 - Structural welding (sheet steel)(2FB)

-AWS D1.3 - Structural welding (sheet steel)(3F V)

-AWS D1.3 - Structural welding (sheet steel)(4F OH)

-AWS D1.6 - Structural welding (stainless steel)(2F)


EDUCATION &/OR EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and 5 years or more of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals in English.  Ability to work in a team environment.  Ability to lead associates, with good people skills, to ensure production schedules, safety practices, and quality standards are upheld.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to interpret bar graphs.


REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


COMPUTER SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of manufacturing software and Excel spreadsheets.  Knowledge of ERP system navigation for clocking and information recovery.
